Winter Dry Skin Driving me Crazy!!!

Post by lwoodall10 » Mon Jan 04, 2010 8:12 pm

Does anyones have any suggestions on good moisturizer? I don't know what is going on, but the last few days my skin has been so dry and itchy I have gone through buckets of lotion and nothing seems to be helping.

I have used all of my Olive Oil Moisturizer...I think I need that by the gallon :(

I don't even know how I can have winter dry skin  I live at the southern tip of Texas and our cold days are like 55 or 60 degrees. I am planning on making an order to get some more Olive Oil lotion, but does anyone have any suggestions? and do they have industrial sizes available

Thanks in advance!

Are you drinking enough water? It really makes a huge difference. You could also cary a face spray with you with aloe and honey or glycerin in it to keep the moisture in your skin. Try night treatments for your extremities: heavy lotions or butters work nicely in an old sock or gloves, and you don't have to worry about the grease. Karen does have another lotion that's heavier - give that a try on your body: http://www.silknaturals.com/creb/produc ... cts_id=654
On your face, add one of the serums (oatmeal, aloe or rose) and seal in the moisture with a heavier cream for the night, or whatever oil your skin likes.

Other than that, adding a shower filter and turning down the heat could help too if this dryness affects your whole body. Once in a while exfoliate, so the treatments you're using can work better.

Good luck!

I am having the same problem. I am dry and itchy everywhere, my lips are chapped and cracking. I live in Texas too the high today is low 40's. I just want a giant vat of lotion that I can jump into. I did notice a big difference when I went to visit my parents. I was dry and itchy that morning. When we got to my parents house it was in the low 80's, my skin felt so much better. Than a cold front came in and I was back to dry and itchy again. Someone told me I should try one of the soaps with lotion in them for the shower. I think I will give that a try.

Egerandi ~ I think my water consumption is ok...It's tough for me, but I get at least 6 glasses of water down. I will try exfoliation, as this is affecting my entire body. I love Karen's stuff, but as itchy and dry as I am right now I would need a gallon bucket of it. :( I did find some pretty thick body lotion with oatmeal I am going to try that for a few days. I have already used most of my Shea butters that I got from Lure Beauty and they work nicely. The only problem is I go through them so fast.

Colleen ~ LOL me too, on the giant vat of lotion to jump into  . I didn't really think about the cold front moving through, but I bet that is it. It has been chilly here for a few day and that is when it all began. I guess my skin is not used to the cold anymore...

Olay makes a body wash infused with Shea Butter and it works really well. We used to live in Indianapolis, IN and my skin was so dry there it was painful, but I started using that and it really help a lot. Don't get me wrong I still used tons of lotion and creams, but I noticed a significant improvement. :)

lwoodall10 - I'm in the same boat and what has helped me during the dry winter months is slathering on emu oil ( I scent mine with essential oil ) . Also, I just recently tried straight 100% Cocoa Butter. I bought it at Whole Foods. It comes in a jar and you have to scrape it out and warm it between your hands. Once it melts a bit you can apply to skin. It's a pain in the butt to scrape out but I've found it really relieves the dryness.

Good luck finding something that helps! Let us know what works for you. :)

I love Cocoa Butter...I have a Cocoa Butter stick that I use a lot to spot treat elbows, knees and when I have and Excema flair up, but I have used most of it. It leaves my skin feeling so soft. We don't have a Whole Foods where I am at. The only thing I have been able to find is the stick, which is good, but a small amount comes in the stick.

Is Emu Oil expensive? I have never heard of it...I will have to do some research. Thanks for the ideas. :)

Emu Oil is a bit pricey but I think it's well worth the money.

I've only purchased emu oil from Lure Beauty and it's around 23.00 for a 4 oz bottle. However, you can get it at these following places in bulk:

http://www.snowdriftfarm.com/
http://www.thesage.com/

I've not ordered from the above but the price is good! I'm not sure about shipping costs though.

I've noticed great improvement in the fine lines around my eyes after using emu oil at night. The only thing is the smell so I scent it with EO. It's a bit rich so that's why I only use it at night on my face. On my legs I use it morning and night. If my daytime moisturizer isn't as moisturizing, I mix a drop of emu oil with the moisturizer and I'm good to go.

Oooh...that definitely makes it worth it . That is good idea to mix with your moisturizer as well. I think I may have to get some now that I know I can multi-task with it.

Thanks!!!

I'm working on it...that's going to be one of the gumballs. Yes, the olive is really great, but I go through it a bit too quickly too. Of the 2 emu places- the Sage is a bit better than snowdrift (they ship oddly- the sage is pretty quick). I think they also have coco butter- in it's raw form it's kind of tough to work with, but it's pretty easy to melt in a double boiler or the microwave.

The lotion bars that I'm working on are pretty cool too though...

ooh! I forgot about the lotion bars. I can't wait to try them.

Karen ~ do you know is cocoa butter in its raw form anything like the Cocoa Butter sticks? It's kind of hard and then once it warms it get's soft. I use the cocoa butter stick on my eczema flair ups and my knees and it leaves my skin so soft.
